Web sites of all sizes can benefit from Cold Fusion. If your business already utilizes a database, you can use Cold Fusion to allow specific types of access from the web. This can save you and your customers time by letting them find information at their own convenience.

One of the more subtle uses of Cold Fusion involves content management. Traditionally, web sites are developed with products such as Front Page or Dream Weaver. The layout is designed and the content added to specific pages. Once this is completed, the files are transferred to the web server (either copied to another directory or sent to another machine through FTP). The problem is that a significant portion of information on a web site is not static. New products are introduced and contact information changes as new people join your company. To change this information requires specific knowledge of the design and setup of the web site.

Using a Cold Fusion server, you can store the content of your web site in the database. A special administrator page is set up to allow a non-technical individual to modify the content of the page without having to know any setup information other than the URL of the administrator page. This frees up your web team from having to constantly update the content of your web site.

Here is an example of how you can manage the content of your web site with Cold Fusion. You can change the web content at the top of the page through the administration page. This technique was used to develop the Habitat For Humanity web site. You can see cold fusion at work by changing the content in the box above and clicking on the "Submit Text" button. When the page is loaded again, the changes will appear in the "Actual Web Content" section.
